Statues: The People They Salute
James Monroe was the first U.S. President to travel by steamboat.
ANSWER to yesterday’s 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸DAILY QUIZ🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
NAME the first U.S. President to travel by steamboat.
JAMES MONROE was the fifth President of the United States, but the first to travel by steamboat. President Monroe went on a four month tour of the Northern states beginning in May of 1817. He wanted to inspect fortifications and public works, “in order to gain them new support in public opinion.”
He traveled by steamboat on some legs of the journey to speed things along. In 1819, President Monroe took a similar tour of the Southern states, and once again traveled by steamboat during some portions of the tour.
