The attempt to purchase this port city from France led to a much larger territorial purchase. NAME the port city and the future U.S. President involved in the negotiation.
The purchase of the port city of New Orleans was the goal of President Thomas Jefferson when France was approached with an offer. Imagine the surprise when Napoleon Bonaparte offered to sell the entire Louisiana Territory! James Monroe was the future U.S. President involved in the negotiation. The signing of the Louisiana Purchase Treaty took place on April 30, 1803 under the presidency of Thomas Jefferson. France officially transferred the territory to the Americans on December 20, 1803.
Pictured is a statue commissioned for the 1904 St. Louis Worldโs Fair to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase. The bas relief, sculpted by Karl Bitter, depicts Robert Livingstion, James Monroe, and Francis Barbe-Marbois signing the Louisiana Purchase. It served as the mold for the bronze statue, which is on display in Jefferson City, Missouri.

The money Napoleon got for
The Louisiana purchase was used to prepare for the invasion of England. That never happened and the money spent was wasted.
